Hesham El-Rewini, Ph.D., P.E.

Dr. Hesham El-Rewini is Full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Southern Methodist University (SMU).  He is the co-author of five books in the areas: computer architecture published by Wiley (2004 and 2005); parallel and distributed computing published by Prentice-Hall and Manning (1992 and 1998); and task scheduling published by Prentice Hall (1994). His two latest books have been translated to Chinese.  His interests include strategic planning, assessment and academic training. Dr. El-Rewini has been invited to deliver keynote lectures at several international conferences and meetings. His research interests include the areas of parallel processing, sensor networks and mobile computing. His research has resulted in numerous publications in journals and conference proceedings. His research projects have been funded by grants from industry and federal agencies including NSF and the U.S. Department of Defense – Army Research Office. He has also been the Principal Investigator of a number of international projects funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to establish partnerships with and offer training programs to universities in Mexico and the Middle East. He is the editor or co-editor of many conference proceeding books published by the IEEE Computer Society and other professional organizations. Other professional activities include participation in the editorial/advisory boards of a number of professional journals and magazines, participation in several international program and steering committees, acting as an NSF and HED panelist, and as a referee for many journals, conferences and workshops. He was the general chair of the 3rd ACS/IEEE International Conference on Computer Systems and Applications, Cairo (Egypt), January 2005. He also chaired the Software Technology Track in HICSS from 1992 to 2003. He was formerly a Full Professor and Interim Chairman of the Computer Science Department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Dr. El-Rewini is a registered engineer in the state of Texas.
