Evans was born in Omak, WA, graduated from Omak High School in 1966, was an undergraduate at at the University of Washington (BSEE 1970) and a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology (MSEE, 1971; Ph.D. in electrical engineering and physics, 1975). After post-doctoral work at Caltech, he was employed by R&D Associates, Marina Del Rey, CA, (1975-79), and was a visiting assistant professor in the electrical engineering department at the University of Washington (1977-79). He has worked at the Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, CA (1979-81); TRW (now Northrup Gumman), Redondo Beach, CA; and RCA Laboratories (now the Sarnoff Corporation), Princeton, NJ (1984-92). In 1992 he joined Southern Methodist University as a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. He is a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of Photodigm. Since 1979 he has primarily worked on the design, growth, and fabrication of conventional cleaved facet and grating surface emitting semiconductor lasers. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE for "contributions to the development, fabrication, and understanding of semiconductor lasers", has over 200 publications, and is a co-editor of the Academic Press book Surface Emitting Semiconductor Lasers and Arrays. Dr. Evans is a licensed professional engineer, has served on numerous national and international committees, is a past Chairman of the Princeton Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS) Section, a past Chairman of the Santa Monica Bay Section of the IEEE, and was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics (1989-1995). He was the finance chairman for the 1994 IEEE International Semiconductor Laser Conference and a Technical Program Vice Chair for the International Communication Conference in 1996.
