I-20 Process

The following steps are required before any accepted applicant can be issued an I-20 for admission into the Graduate Division of the School of Engineering:

1) The Graduate Division must have on file an original or notarized bank statement, converted into U.S. dollars, for the minimum amount of $25,000 for nine months worth of study. Please note that copies are unacceptable and any amount listed below the requirement, cannot be processed. An additional amount of $5,000 will be required for a dependent traveling with you.

2) All students, except Research Assistants/Teaching Assistants, are required to submit a deposit of $100 U.S. dollars. Once you have enrolled at SMU, you may request a refund. However, if you do not enroll at SMU for the designated term, your deposit is non-refundable.

3) Complete only the personal information of the I-20 Request Form and return it to the Graduate Office. You should provide information such as your name, address, date of birth, citizenship, and other similar information for any dependent(s) traveling with you.

4) Read, sign, and return the Maintaining Your F1 Visa Form or Maintaining Your J-1 Compliance Form. The DS-2019 form request is found here.

5) [For transfer students only] Complete the I-20 Transfer Form and submit to your current college/university’s International Office. Once your school has completed the form, they should fax to SMU’s International Office at (214) 768-1051.

Please be aware all of these items must be completed before SMU’s International Office will begin to process any I-20 requests.

All documents should be returned to the Office of Graduate and Executive Admissions, P.O. Box 750335, Dallas, TX 75275-0335.
