What is "Engineering and Beyond?"

At the SMU School of Engineering, we prepare students for careers in Engineering and Beyond.

So what exactly does this mean? And why is it important?

Engineering and Beyond means that we recruit and prepare a highly selective group of students to be more than just engineers. This is important because the many of today’s engineering graduates move into leadership positions within five years after graduation. We want to prepare our students for these positions from the start of their careers.

For undergraduate students, we offer unique leadership courses in addition to the curriculum required for each major. These courses include Engineering Communications, Engineering Management, Technical Entrepreneurship, and Global Perspectives and Information Engineering.

Our Industry Scholars Program enables qualified students to obtain scholarship funding plus valuable work experience during their junior and senior years

These leadership classes, combined with SMU’s strong liberal education, produce a new breed of engineer – one who is both technically strong and has a thorough understanding of society and who is better trained to meet the challenges of today’s rapidly changing world.

Real-life projects let students see how their engineering skills can impact people’s lives. For example, each year mechanical engineering students design projects for people with disabilities. (Patent applied for)

And we’re continually looking ahead to determine the most relevant curriculum for today’s engineering students. In fact, many of the country’s leading engineering schools have implemented a first-year curriculum that was developed at SMU. In addition, we’ve developed several unique programs such as Engineering Management, Information Engineering and Management, Software Engineering, Manufacturing Systems, Telecommunications, Systems Engineering and Entrepreneurship.

SMU undergraduate students participate in senior design projects that are focused on real-world problems such as the mobility needs of the handicapped or the information management needs of local businesses.

Our innovative curriculum is supplemented by programs such as our popular Cooperative Education Program and our new Industry Scholars Program that give students hands-on

experience with some of the country’s leading corporations. Undergraduates also can gain research experience through programs such as our Research Scholars Program.

We also start early to help prepare students for careers through formal mentoring programs such as a Career Development Seminar Series, in which students will take a seminar each of their four years. Additional programs such as “Lunch with a Pro,” which enables small groups of students to meet engineering leaders in an informal atmosphere, offer further opportunities to learn about career development.

We’re also focusing a lot of effort on increasing the presence of under-represented groups in engineering – a goal that is necessary to maintain our country’s pre-eminence in engineering. Our Gender Parity Initiative and Minority Recruitment Initiative are unique. We have numerous scholarships available to help make an engineering education available to qualified students.

And we are giving international students a chance to enhance their engineering education through cooperative programs with universities in Mexico, Brazil, and Tunisia.

For graduate students, “Engineering and Beyond” means a variety of programs to help students advance beyond their current position. This includes the country’s largest number of executive master’s degree programs designed for working engineers.

It also means one of the country’s oldest and largest distance learning programs, enabling students to earn master’s degrees in 19 subject areas without setting foot in Dallas. We supplement our distance learning courses with value-added seminars at no extra cost to students.

The success of our students – both undergraduate and graduate – is living proof that SMU attracts and develops strong and talented engineering leaders for our new century!
