Name: Andrew Rissing
Hometown: Irving, Texas
Majors: Computer Engineering and Math
Class of 2004
Andrew Rissing's father is an engineer, so that may have played some
role in shaping his career goals. But this sociable young man discovered
his aptitude for engineering himself while taking a computer programming
class in high school. So while his father is a mechanical engineer, Andrew
is pursuing a career in computer science and engineering.
He's already worked with two companies through the school's co-op program,
including Raytheon, where his father works. He helped Raytheon test and
de-bug software for a Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) system that will
be used on search-and-rescue helicopters and help the company design
a web-based tool that will help standardize procedures for their software
design processes.
His good work has already landed him a job offer from
Raytheon for when he graduates
in May 2004. Andrew says he also hopes to pursue a master's degree
at SMU, probably in Systems Engineering.
In addition to his co-op work, Andrew has devoted much of his time
at SMU to serving as a Resident Assistant in McElvaney Hall. He says
he enjoys being able to help students with their problems - including
their computer questions.
