George R. Brown Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering invites nominations and applications for the George R. Brown Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will be an internationally recognized scholar with a distinguished record of funding and publication and will be expected to build a world renowned interdisciplinary research program synergistic with the ongoing research in the Mechanical Engineering Department and the School of Engineering. He/she will be an academic leader, an entrepreneurial researcher as well as an outstanding communicator who will represent the Mechanical Engineering Department and School of Engineering on- and off-campus.
Southern Methodist University is in a period of remarkable growth spearheaded by the extraordinary success of a 5-year, $540 million capital campaign launched in 1997 in support of student scholarships, faculty positions and programs, and facilities. The School of Engineering has two new buildings; the Junkins Engineering Building (completed in 2002) and the Embrey Engineering Building (completed in 2006). The Embrey Engineering Building is the new home of the Mechanical Engineering Department for which the University is pursuing the US Green Building Council LEED Gold Certification. With over 10,000 students, SMU is a leading private University located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, a dynamic region with leading high-technology companies in the aerospace, defense, energy, information technology, life sciences, semiconductors, telecommunications, and transportation industries. With the world renowned Baylor Research Institute and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas also is a center of medical research.
The Mechanical Engineering Department is home to the Research Center for Advanced Manufacturing, the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Lasers and Plasmas for Advanced Manufacturing. It is also the home of several other research laboratories in the areas of mechanics of materials; dynamics, systems and controls; porous materials applications; nanoscale electro-thermal sciences; opto-electronics packaging; laser micromachining; and experimental Fluid Mechanics (http://www.engr.smu.edu/me/).

Applications should include a statement of research and teaching interests, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least four references. References will not be contacted before first receiving approval from the candidate. The selected candidate is expected to begin his/her appointment in the Fall of 2008. To ensure full consideration for the position, the application should be submitted by May 1, 2008, but the Search Committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled.
