The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department at SMU is branded as the place for “Personal Education and Boundless Innovation.” In CSE, we believe in conducting world-class research with absolute commitment to excellence in teaching.
Our academic programs are continually revised to reflect ever-changing societal needs and technology trends. We distinguish ourselves by complementing our classical computer science and computer engineering curriculum with trendy specializations including those in animation, gaming, and cyber security. The gaming specialization is offered in conjunction with the Guildhall at Southern Methodist University. Guildhall is the premier graduate video game education program in the US. We are one of the NSA (National Security Agency) Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance. Along with technical competence, our curriculum focuses on developing students’ communication skills and leadership qualities so that they excel and lead in an emerging global market.
We have world-class faculty who conduct research in areas of core competence including Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Arithmetic, Data Mining, Disaster Tolerance, Embedded Systems, Security Engineering, and Software Engineering. We position ourselves to become the major creative engine for the industry base in the DFW area by grounding all our research to real-world industry problems. Our doors are open to technologists and entrepreneurs facilitating free flow of ideas and technology transfer.
These are exciting times for Computer Science and Engineering at SMU. We will have a new home in the new Caruth Hall, expected to be completed in fall of 2009. A grant from the Caruth Foundation of Communities Foundation of Texas provided the seed money for the new building.
I invite you to be part of our community and help shape our vision for the future.
Sincerely,
Suku Nair, Ph.D, P.E.
