Mobile Computing Research

In the future, mobile computing will include access by mobile units to databases located in a fixed computer network. We have previously proposed a model for transaction processing, Kangaroo Transaction, in the mobile environment which builds on multidatabase global transactions and split transactions. This transaction model is the first to capture both the data and movement behaviors of mobile transactions. We have also looked at recovery issues for mobile transactions and caching at the mobile unit. A major thrust for the SMU DBGROUP research team in the next five years will be to further investigate Location Dependent Data and a global architecture for ubiquitous data broadcast.
