Message From the Chair

October 19, 2007

These are exciting times for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at SMU. As we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the department (1967 – 2007), we are preparing to have a new home for CSE in the new Caruth Hall, expected to be completed in fall of 2009. A grant from the Caruth Foundation of Communities Foundation of Texas provided the seed money for the new building which will provide a home for the Computer Science and Engineering Department; Caruth Institute for Engineering Education; and Engineering Management, Information & Systems Department. The new building will provide much-needed new and improved space for teaching, research and innovation.

In CSE, we believe in conducting world class research with absolute commitment to excellence in teaching. Our academic programs are continually revised to reflect emerging societal needs and the interdisciplinary and global nature of a changing world. In addition to the technical competence, we ensure that our graduates possess the added value skills that will enable them to succeed in a global market. Our students learn how to become innovators, how to work in teams in multidisciplinary hands-on projects, how to communicate effectively, and how to become future leaders. We are fortunate enough to be able to have extraordinary students, small classes, and close student-faculty interactions.

I invite you to be part of our community and become immersed in our educational environment, and to challenge us as educators to provide you with the best education and experiences possible.

Sincerely,

Hesham El-Rewini, Ph.D, P.E.
