Tutorial for Putty

This is a short guide to getting started using PuTTY to access the SMU Engineering School server. If you require more information on using the more advanced features of PuTTY, please see the official PuTTY documentation located at: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/docs.html

Putty is loaded on most machines in the School of Engineering. If you would like to download a copy, visit http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/.

  1. Enter the following information:
    • Host name: name of the any of the general use unix machines such as blaze, apoc, neo, tank, sal; if you are located off campus, follow the name of the machine by '.engr.smu.edu'
    • Select the protocol: SSH recommended
    • Verify that the "Preferred SSH protocal version" is set to "2"
    • The session may be saved by clicking the 'Save' button on the right hand side of the 'Load, save or delete a stored Session', and then later retrieved by double clicking from the list box under the 'Saved Sessions'.
    • Click 'Open' button
    • If you see the warning dialog box, click Yes.

    • You are prompted for the username and password. Use your engineering school account to login in.
    • Once logged in you may now begin interacting with the system by entering commands at the prompt.
