Login or Establishing a Connection

If you have an Internet connection, you can access these machines with putty or WinSCP.

If you want an Internet connection with SMU PPP, information can be found here.

Logging into Xwindow terminals

  • Select a machine by double-clicking or clicking the host and then accept. Machines are grouped by operating system name (uname). This may or may not relate to the tradename by which the operating system is known. For example, the OSF1 machines are Compaq Tru64 Unix and the SunOS machines are Solaris.
  • Select the CPUinfo button for machine descriptions. The Load value to the right of the hostname indicates how heavily a machine is being used.
  • Try to select one of the faster machines with the least load. After selecting a host, the login and password window will appear.
  • The login process looks for a file called .xsession. If that file is not present, the default window manager will be executed. Other window managers are available and help is available configuring your .xsession file.
