Accounts

How to Establish Engineering Accounts

Most accounts needed for Engineering classes are opened at the beginning of the semester when the students are registered.

Sometimes accounts are created individually. An account form should be filled out. The form can be downloaded in two formats:

The form should be faxed to the number on the form, or hand delivered to SIC, Room 306.

Accounts will take 24-48 hours to create.

Usernames and Passwords

Engineering accounts are completely separate from ITS (SMU) accounts. When a new Engineering account is opened, Engineering Computer Operations attempts to match the Engineering username to the ITS username assigned to that individual.

In this way some confusion is avoided about what username should be used for logons. Sometimes the name ITS assigns has already been used in Engineering. In these cases, the Engineering username will differ from the ITS username.

In the beginning, a single password is assigned to each account. When a new user logs onto a PC, the password must be changed. This does not change the password for UNIX. Without coordination, it is possible to have two or more passwords in Engineering.

The passwords in engineering have no relationship to passwords assigned by the University for Access, WebCT, or ITS.

Engineering Accounts

Unix: all users, X-terminals, off-site access, X-ware software on PC Engr username, UNIX password: change password by typing 'passwd' after login
SEAS-S domain: students, PCs in labs Change password by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete after logging in and select Change Password from the menu
SEAS domain: faculty/staff, TV studios Must change password at initial login

Engineering Email

All Engineering accounts have an email facility. There are several options available. Unless otherwise requested, new engineering student accounts are forwarded to the student's @smu.edu address. This forward can be modified to forward engineering email elsewhere or removed to utilize the engineering email facilities.

Engineering email can be accessed using any IMAP capable mail client such as:
