Students entering SMU who wish to pursue degrees in engineering are advised by Dr. Betsy Willis,
Interim Director of Pre-Engineering Advising. Students meet with Dr. Willis during AARO
(Academic Advising Registration and Orientation)
and subsequent enrollment terms for the purpose of academic advising.
Dr. Willis assists students in selecting courses to fulfill degree requirements
as well as other courses that are of interest to the student. Additionally,
students develop a 4-year college career plan with Dr. Willis
that sets goals for academics and college life.
Students may also see Dr. Willis at any time to discuss other academic or career related issues.
All students entering SMU as first year students start as “Pre-Majors.”
Each major area of study at SMU has a core curriculum that must be completed prior to declaring that major.
In engineering, the core is as follows:
Admission to Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering:
Completion of 24 credit hours
GPA of 2.00 or higher in the following courses:
ENGL 1301
ENGL 1302 or equivalent
MATH 1337
MATH 1338
PHYS 1303
Admission to Computer Science or Management Science:
Completion of 24 credit hours
GPA of 2.00 or higher in the following courses:
ENGL 1301
ENGL 1302 or equivalent
MATH 1337
MATH 1338
CSE 1341
CSE 2341
Upon admission to an engineering major, students are matched
with a faculty member who serves as their advisor. Students receive
an email notifying them of their admission to engineering and the
name and contact information for their departmental advisor.
