Delores Etter Appointed to Serve on National Research Council Committee

Etter, TI Director of the Caruth Institute for Engineering Education at SMU, has been appointed to serve on the division committee of the National Research Council’s Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences. Thackrah, announced that the Navy’s highest awards for engineers and scientists would be officially named in honor of Dr. Delores M. SMU Builds On Its Dedication To Engineering With Groundbreaking For New Caruth Hall
DALLAS (SMU) — Engineering education at SMU takes a major step forward today with groundbreaking for the new Caruth Hall for the Lyle School of Engineering. To date, commitments totaling more than $18.4 million toward a goal of $22 million have been received for the building project. Encana Inc., a leading oil and gas producer in north America, is supporting
Lyle Engineering undergraduate student scholarships with a gift of $50,000.
The gift was presented in the new J. Lindsay Embrey Engineering Building
on September 14 with undergraduate students, Dean Geoffrey Orsak, and
Encana employees present. The gift will help support ten undergraduate

Embrey Engineering Building wins "2006 Excellence Award"
in Higher Education
Texas
Construction Magazine, an industry leading commercial construction publication,
awarded the Lyle School of Engineering's newest building, the Embrey Engineering
Building, a "2006 Excellence Award" in Higher Education.
An Independent jury of industry experts in design and construction judged
112 nominated projects in a variety of categories in early September. Eligible
projects had to be located in Texas and completed between September 1, 2005
and September 1, 2006.
The Embrey Engineering Building, along with the other winners, will be featured
in the December issue of the magazine with an awards ceremony occurring
in Houston, Texas on December 5, 2006.
SMU Takes the "LEED" with New Environment-Friendly Engineering
Building
DALLAS (SMU) – The first university building in Texas built for
gold-level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification
is now open for classes at SMU. The J. Lindsay Embrey Building houses the
Mechanical Engineering Department and the Environmental and Civil Engineering
Department in SMU's Lyle School of Engineering. A dedication and ribbon-cutting

First-ever recipient of the Educator of the Year
Will be Honored at Silicon Valley Gala
CMP Media’s Electronics Group announced on March 27, 2006 that Geoffrey
C. Orsak, dean of the Southern Methodist University Lyle School of Engineering
and executive director of the Institute for Engineering Education at SMU,
is the recipient of the EE Times ACE Award for Educator of the Year. The
first-ever category of the EE Times ACE Awards will be presented at the
EE Times ACE Awards Gala on April 4, 2006, as part of the Embedded Systems

SMU Electrical Engineering Student Richard Moore Named World Wildlife
Fund Leader
Richard Moore, a junior electrical engineering student at SMU, was recently
named a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Leader for his academic accomplishments,
leadership, and demonstrated commitment to the environment. Moore will receive
a scholarship, the opportunity to participate in a four-day environmental
summit in Washington D.C., and an all-expense paid Earthwatch Institute

SMU Mechanical Engineering Student Leads Winning Team in International
Space Station Design Contest
Courtney Fagg, a junior mechanical engineering and physics double major
at SMU, led the winning design team at the 50th annual American Astronautical
Society conference November 15-16, 2005 in League City, Texas. Fagg’s
team, the Medicine/Life Support Team, developed a biome to grow plants on

Life Better for People with Disabilities
More than 38 million people have some type of disability, according to
2003 U.S. Census reports. The Braille Currency Stamp and The Halo are just
two of seven products developed by students in SMU’s 2006 Senior Design
Course to help persons with disabilities live fuller and more independent

Texas Governor Makes Major Educational
Announcement at Lyle School of Engineering
On
December 15, 2005, Gov. Rick Perry visited SMU and the Lyle School of Engineering
to annnounce a new $71M public-private statewide initiative to improve
engineering, math, science, and technology education. The program, entitled
The Texas High School Project will create new schools across the state
that will emphasize STEM education.
The program is funded in part by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, the State of Texas, The Communities
Foundation of Texas, and a number of key leading corporations including
National Instruments. Others participating in the event were TEA Commissioner
Dr. Shirley Neeley, National Instruments President and CEO Dr. Jim Truchard,
and Executive Director of the Texas High School Project John Fitzpatrick.
During
his visit, Gov. Perry met with a number of students and teachers who are
participating in the Infinity Project - a national program in pre-college
engineering education created and managed by the Lyle School of Engineering.

Texas Governor Makes Major Wind Energy Announcement at Lyle School of Engineering
On October 2, 2006, Texas Governor Rick Perry announced at the Lyle School of Engineering $10 billion dollars worth of new private development in wind energy for Texas. "This is a landmark day as the State of Texas partners with private industry to make a historic investment of more than $10 billion in new wind energy infrastructure that will diversify our energy production, clean up our air, and help Texas surpass our renewable energy goals, " Perry said.
