Here are just a few facts about Southern Methodist University and the School of Engineering.

Student population - There are currently more than 600 undergraduate students and over 1,000 graduate-level students enrolled in SMU Engineering programs

Teaching - With an 11-1 student to faculty ratio, get the very best educational experience available.

Degree programs - SMU Engineering currently provides undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees, with many specializations, through five departments. 30% of our undergraduate students graduate with a second degree outside of engineering.

Distance learning - SMU Engineering is a pioneer in distance learning, beginning in 1969. Today, thousands of students worldwide benefit from digitally-recorded instruction in all graduate engineering degree programs.

Faculty research - The SMU Engineering faculty represents a world-class group of technical experts in a variety of critically important fields. On a per faculty basis, the SMU School of Engineering receives some of the largest research awards in the nation. Research has led to new programs such as Security Engineering, Packaging and a Gaming Track in Computer Engineering.

Facilities - The SMU School of Engineering offers students some of the finest teaching and research facilities in the nation. In addition to the Jerry Junkins Building which opened in 2002, SMU has now added the
J. Lindsay Embrey Engineering Building to the engineering quadrangle. The Embrey Building is home to the departments of Mechanical, Environmental & Civil Engineering. As one of the very first buildings in north Texas to be designed and constructed to LEED Environmental Standards, the Embrey Engineering Building is a living laboratory for our students and faculty as well as a showpiece for design and construction in our region. Overall there are more than 30 laboratories used by SMU Engineering faculty and students.

Environmental engineering - According to Fortune Magazine, Environmental Engineering has an expected growth of 54.3%, exceeding other engineering professions.

National ranking - The school’s operations research and management science program is ranked in the top 25 OR/MS programs nationally. SMU Electrical Engineering for two years has ranked among the nation’s best by U.S.News & World Report Ranking of Best Graduate Schools.

Leadership Opportunities - Student organizations are comprised of Student Chapters of Professional Organizations, Professional Service Organizations, Honorary Organizations and SMU Engineering Organizations. Dallas has one of the highest concentrations of engineering and technology companies in the country; therefore, many of our students graduate with engineering experience from Summer Internships and Co-ops.

Women in Engineering - The percentage of women in engineering at SMU is 50% higher than the national average. SMU Engineering's goal is to reach gender parity in the next five years.

Scholarships - Over 70% of undergraduate engineering students receive an academic scholarship.

Outreach - SMU Engineering sponsors a variety of programs designed to introduce students in grades K-12 to engineering. Such programs are vital to ensuring a future engineering workforce.
